What is the Nuchal Translucency Test?

The nuchal translucency test is an important ultrasound examination performed in the first trimester of pregnancy, usually between week 11+0 and week 13+6. During the examination, the thickness of fluid in the fetal neck area is measured, a measurement that helps assess the risk for certain chromosomal syndromes, including Down syndrome, Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 13.

Beyond measuring the translucency itself, the examination allows early assessment of gestational age, fetal heartbeat, number of fetuses, and sometimes also an initial impression of major anatomical structures. When the examination is performed by an experienced physician with advanced ultrasound equipment, significant information about pregnancy development can be obtained at an early stage.

Important to know: Nuchal translucency is a screening test - meaning it does not definitively diagnose a chromosomal problem, but rather assesses the level of risk. The final risk calculation is determined after completing the blood tests of the first trimester and second trimester biochemical screening. It is also possible to perform NIPT testing, genetic chip testing, exome  or additional diagnostic tests.

At Dr. Harak's clinic, the nuchal translucency test is performed with a professional, calm and personal approach, using advanced ultrasound equipment and high accuracy, to provide parents with clear, reliable and reassuring information from the very beginning of the journey.

The examination is designed not only to measure, but also to explain, accompany, and give you a sense of security in the early stages of pregnancy.

The information about the scope and nature of the examination is based on accepted guidelines in the field of fetal medicine, including FMF and ACOG.

Importance of the Test

The nuchal translucency test is not a diagnostic test — it assesses the risk level and is combined with additional findings and blood tests to create an accurate risk profile.

  • ✓ Early detection enables optimal planning and monitoring
  • ✓ Combination with blood tests significantly increases accuracy
  • ✓ Complete and detailed explanation of every finding by Dr. Hark
  • ✓ Referral to complementary tests when needed

Frequently Asked Questions

A finding of high translucency is not a diagnosis, it indicates an increased risk that requires further investigation. Dr. Hark will guide you regarding the next steps: NIPT test, amniocentesis, or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) — according to the risk level and gestational week.
Yes - sometimes it is possible to get an initial assessment regarding the fetal gender already during the nuchal translucency scan, mainly according to the angle of the genital tubercle, but it's important to know that at this stage this is only an assessment and not a definitive determination.
At weeks 11-13+6  the external genital organs are still in developmental stages. Therefore, even when there is a hint in a certain direction, the accuracy level depends greatly on the gestational week, fetal position, imaging quality and the ability to see the area clearly.
Usually, as we approach week 13-14 it is possible to get a more accurate assessment, but clearer confirmation is usually given during the early anatomy scan.
Ultrasound findings are received immediately during the examination itself. With the test results, we proceed to complete the biochemical screening within the framework of the insuring health fund.
It's possible to combine the nuchal translucency test with early anatomical assessment of the fetus, especially around weeks 13–14. This combination allows obtaining important information about fetal development at an early stage, alongside measuring translucency and risk assessment. However, since some fetal systems are still in developmental stages, completion of this examination may be required and of course it's essential to also perform a late scan at weeks 21-24.
